Dispatches

Written from the desks where this actually lands

Public information work is done by a small number of very tired people, usually at the wrong hour. These pieces are written in the voices of the roles that carry it — the PIO, the clerk, the public works director, and the resident on the other end. Each one is a constructed composite, not an account of any jurisdiction.

  1. Public works · rural county

    Four forty in the morning

A boil-water notice, two thousand households, and the eleven hours it used to take to reach the ones who do not read English.

  2. Public information · mid-size city

    Three hundred and sixty characters

A PIO on why every tool she owns is built to say that something happened, and none of them are built to say what to do about it.

  3. Resident · the receiving end

My mother heard the whole thing

Twenty years of being the family member who translates the city, and the night that stopped being the job.

  4. Clerk's office · small town

The room was never the problem

What happened to public comment when the people in the back of a bad room could finally hear the front of it.

CommunityCast runs on BYOPA. A channel is free to stand up, and the sensible first use is a scheduled exercise, not an incident.
